Abstract

Pain is a complex multidimensional experience encompassing biological, emotional, and cognitive factors and reflecting a psychological state. Thus, a broad, comprehensive approach is key to managing many pain conditions. Such a process is captured in the biopsychosocial approach to pain management. This chapter reviews the role of psychosocial factors in pain, including orofacial pain, and addresses management approaches built upon the biopsychosocial framework of pain.
