Abstract
Forensic DNA profiling using short tandem repeat (STR) markers has played an important role in human identification for criminal casework, missing person cases, and historical investigations. For challenging forensic samples such as skeletal remains and degraded stains, obtaining a full complement of STR markers may be impossible due to the fragmentation of DNA. miniSTR markers have been developed to improve the success rate of developing a DNA profile from challenged samples. The development, structure, benefits, and limitations of miniSTR testing will be presented.
