Abstract
Understanding the interventions used to lower serum low density lipoprotein cholesterol requires understanding of the basic features of lipid metabolism. Most of these interventions affect either the biosynthesis or the excretion of cholesterol. There are five basic categories of lipoprotein particles, each having a special role in lipid transport and lipid metabolism. The exogenous and endogenous pathways involved in cholesterol biosynthesis, metabolism, and transport are described.
