title = "Development of a rapid autopsy program for studies of brain immunity",
abstract = "Human glia are essential cellular models used for studies of neurodegenerative diseases. Fetal neuroglia are commonly used, as they can be recovered in large quantities and sustained for long periods in culture. However, fetal neuroglia may have limitations in reflecting adult diseases and additionally can pose ethical issues in translating products of abortion for research use. To address these concerns, we developed a rapid autopsy program to procure age- and disease-specific neuroglia from adult brain tissues within hours of death. The challenges in developing this initiative, reflecting experiences from 69 autopsies over 4 years, are presented.",

note = "Funding Information: The many authors of this paper would like to express their profound appreciation to the families of each RAP donor. This program is entirely dependent upon their generosity and commitment to research during a time of great sorrow. This labor-intensive endeavor was also very expensive and we thank multiple sources of support including federal, state, university, and private donations. This effort was supported, in part, through funding from 1 P01 NS43985-01A1 (PI, HEG, core leader, AG), Clinical Research Center, and the University of Nebraska. The program is indebted to all the following individuals for their commitment and support: Nebraska Medical Center Administrative Staff: Dr. Samuel Cohen, Michelle Brester, Ernest Prentice; CNND staff: Eric Benner, Kevin Birusingh, Shrinivas Bishu, Toni Biskup, James Buescher, Kimberly Carlson, Casey Diekmann, Travis Lewis, Alicia Lopez, Laura McCabe, Craig Nemechek, Hui Peng, Garrett Pohlman, Lisa Ryan, Courtney Schellpeper, Bryan Karry, Brent Ellison, Shelly Herek, Radhika Suryadevara, Lori Todd-Reed, Shannon Wakeley, Greg Weber, Drs.
