Area of Expertise

The majority of my research has been focused on matters of resource allocation and burden of disease, beginning with a variety of comparative effectiveness and economic evaluation projects for the CDC-sponsored Tuberculosis Epidemiologic Studies Consortium (TBESC). Through TBESC, I frequently collaborate with or lead local, national, and international projects in support of TB control efforts, as well as other issues of public health concern. A good example of the nature of my work is a series of investigator-initiated efforts that identified, measured, described, and valued the health and other burdens left as sequelae to even adequately treated tuberculosis. This provided very strong justification of prevention efforts as vastly more valuable than previously appreciated, and provided evidence to drive more effective domestic TB control policy. The TBESC has also provided opportunities for other faculty and students to conduct and present impactful research in settings ranging from our local public health department, to CDC, to high burden regions and developing economies overseas.
