Area of Expertise
Education & Experience: I hold a Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) from Washington University in St. Louis and a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Economics from Texas A&M University. I have more than 30 years of experience in healthcare management, including roles at Baylor Health Care System, Tenet Health Systems, Children’s Health and Cook Children’s. My executive leadership spanned multiple healthcare settings, including general hospital operations, physician practice operations, and post-acute hospitals in for-profit, not-for-profit and academic entities. Executive leadership during times of extreme change allowed me to develop expertise in insurance/reimbursement and alternative payments models beginning in the early 1990s. Rapid advancements in technology during my career required me to lead several large-scale electronic health record implementations and billing and collection transformations (Cerner, Athenahealth and Epic). As the Dallas-Fort Worth population boomed, I planned and implemented many large-scale facility expansion projects and partnered with physician executives to grow provider networks to meet the health needs of one of the fastest-growing metropolises in the country. I retired from healthcare operations in 2021 after serving five years as Chief Executive Officer of Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospitals of Fort Worth and City View. Teaching Areas & Public Health Interests: My administrative career focused on building synergy between clinicians and health systems. I have a strong interest in the career development of emerging operational and public health leaders interested in promoting increased communication and understanding amongst stakeholders (patients, clinicians, insurance companies and government agencies), with the ultimate goal being best utilization of resources to consistently improve the health of the communities we serve. I believe healthcare leaders should be catalysts in implementing positive change. Management of financial, physical and human resources to improve public health is a noble career choice, and I look forward to mentoring HSC students determined to create positive change in healthcare. Professional Activities & Awards: I am an active member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and previously served on committees for the Children’s Hospital Association and the Medical Group Management Association. I have significant experience in hospital accreditation (The Joint Commission) as well as medical staff and governing board relations.
